Volume Snapshots are another innovation from MD Web Hosting, and form part of our integrated approach to enterprise data protection. Snapshots save the state of an entire server as it existed at a particular point in time. In traditional hosting environments, if something goes wrong with a server (e.g., filesystem corruption, deletion of critical system files, and so forth) then customers are stuck with lengthy delays, sometimes days long, as the hosting company scrambles to recover what they can from out-dated backups.

With MD snapshots, if something happens to the server on the software layer then we can promote a point-in-time snapshot to the primary role in minutes (not days!) and have the server back to its original working condition. MD makes a daily snapshot to ensure that data is usually no older than 24 hours.

If RTO (recovery time objective) and RPO (recovery point objective) metrics are important to you - that is, if keeping your online business operational as quickly as possible after an incident matters - then snapshots should be on top of your list.

Volume snapshots are an extra layer of protection and are in addition to our rigorous file level daily backups already offered free of charge to customers on our high-availability hosting cluster.
