Uploading files with FTP
From MDSupportWiki
To upload your website to a webserver, you need a special program called an FTP client. I recommend CoreFTP, a free and easy to use FTP client.
Once you have installed the FTP program, you will need to input the following information:
- Site Name: Type a descriptive name for your site here, for example, Jen’s Flower Site, or My Website (it doesn't really matter what you put here)
- Host/IP/URL: Your web address. For example, www.mydomain.com.au. If your domain name is new, you will have to use the temporary IP address sent in your welcome email for the first 48 hours following registration. This period is called the propagation stage - just like a stone thrown into a lake, it does take some time for the ripples to reach all the corners of the internet.
- Username: Contained in your welcome email
- Password: Contained in your welcome email
Once these details have been typed in, press Connect.
When you have connected, you will be able to upload files to the webserver. You will notice there are two panes, or sections, in your FTP client - the left pane is your local hard drive, the right pane is your webserver. Simply drag your files across from left to right to upload your files, just like you would in windows explorer.
You will have to copy your files into the “public_html”, so doubleclick that folder to open it up before you drag anything across.
That’s all there is to it - once on your webserver, your webpage will be up and live! When someone types in your domain, they will be directed to your index.html page. If your domain has not yet propogated (a process that takes 48 hours) you can preview your website by typing in the IP address into your browser.
