Transferring your .nz domain

Getting hosting with your domain transfer

If you have purchased a hosting plan with MD and wish to transfer your domain here, we recommend you contact your current domain registrar (the people you registered your domain with) and request that they update the DNS settings to the ones we gave you in the welcome email. You can of course do it yourself if you know how. This will make sure that your domain will work with your hosting a lot quicker.

Transfer procedure

When a domain transfer begins you will not be able to make any changes to the domain settings. Domain transfers are not instant and usually take 7 days to complete. You will be emailed once the transfer has been completed.

Tip: Transfers initiated in the grace period will be unsuccessful. The grace period is the first five days immediately
after the registration of a new domain. Once the grace period has expired, you may transfer your .nz domain at any time.

Step 1: Ensure your domain name administrative/registrant email address is up to date at your current registrar.

Your current registrar is the business or company that you purchased your domain name from.

Step 2: Obtain the Unique Domain Authentication Identification (UDAI) from your current registrar

Your UDAI is a special code used for transferring .nz domains between registrars. Your current registrar must provide this code to you promptly and at no cost.

Step 3: Check the transfer pricing

Currently, we do not charge any fees for .nz transfers. You will be charged the standard 1 year rate when your .nz domain comes up for renewal.

Step 4. Place your transfer order request via our order form.

Proceed to the transfer order form. Select option 2 on the order form, 'Transfer my domain name to MD'. Enter your domain and click next. Proceed with your order as normal.

Step 5: Send your UDAI code

We require your UDAI code to complete the transfer. This can be provided either via a ticket or over the phone.

Step 6: MD processes the transfer

We will send a transfer request to the NZ Domain Name Commissioner. Once fully processed, we will receive a new UDAI code which we shall send to your administrative email. The email cannot be sent to a different email address unless you update your domain contact information at your current registrar.

Domain names transfers are not instant. Provided there aren't any errors/delays, it usually takes from 5 to 7 days for the transfer to complete from the time you approve the transfer. You will receive a welcome email to from MD to manage your domain name once the transfer is complete. Please be patient whilst your domain is being transferred. MD will email you once the transfer is complete or if there is a problem. The process can not be sped up.
