Getting hosting with your domain transfer

If you have purchased a hosting plan with MD and wish to transfer your domain here, we recommend you contact your current domain registrar (the people you registered your domain with) and request that they update the DNS settings to the ones we gave you in the welcome email. You can of course do it yourself if you know how. This will make sure that your domain will work with your hosting a lot quicker.

Transfer procedure

When a domain transfer begins you will not be able to make any changes to the domain settings. Domain transfers are not instant and usually take 7 days to complete. You will be emailed once the transfer has been completed.

Step 1: Ensure your domain name administrative/registrant email address is up to date at your current registrar.

Your registrar is the business or company that you purchased your domain name from.

An email will be sent to your address requesting permission to transfer the domain, so make sure that it is accurate! You need to receive and approve the transfer via this email for the transfer to be successful. You can check your official email address on our WHOIS lookup tool

Step 2: Turn off registrar lock at your current registrar.

Registrar lock (also known as domain lock) stops your domain name from being transferred to another registrar. It is designed to stop domain hijacking. However, when active it will stop the domain from being transferred. Please ensure registrar lock is turned off to allow your domain transfer to complete. If you are unsure if this setting is active, please contact your current registrar requesting this feature be turned off.

Tip: make sure you registered your domain name more than 60 days ago, otherwise the transfer will fail.

Step 3. Check the transfer pricing

When you transfer your domain name, you pay for 1 year of registration at our current price. This extends registration of your domain name by 1 year from it's current expiry date.

Step 4. Obtain your domain transfer code

To transfer your domain name you need a transfer code. You need to obtain the code from your current domain name registrar before initiating the transfer.

Step 5. Place your transfer order request via our order form.

Proceed to the transfer order form. Select option 2 on the order form, 'Transfer my domain name to MD'. Enter your domain and click next. Proceed with your order as normal.

Step 6. Approve the domain transfer.

Approximately 24-48 hours after submitting the transfer, you will receive a domain transfer approval email to your official domain registrant/administrative email address. Follow the instructions in the email and approve the transfer. Once approved, the transfer will take place. The email cannot be sent to a different email address unless you update your domain contact information at your current registrar.

Step 7. Wait for the transfer to complete.

Domain names transfers are not instant. Provided there aren't any errors/delays, it usually takes from 5 to 7 days for the transfer to complete from the time you approve the transfer. You will receive a welcome email to from MD to manage your domain name once the transfer is complete. Please be patient whilst your domain is being transferred. MD will email you once the transfer is complete or if there is a problem. The process can not be sped up.
