Transferring your .au domain
Getting hosting with your domain transfer
If you have purchased a hosting plan with MD and wish to transfer your domain here, we recommend you contact your current domain registrar (the people you registered your domain with) and request that they update the DNS settings to the ones we gave you in the welcome email. You can of course do it yourself if you know how. This will make sure that your domain will work with your hosting a lot quicker.
Transfer procedure
When a domain transfer begins you will not be able to make any changes to the domain settings. Domain transfers are not instant and usually take 7 days to complete. You will be emailed once the transfer has been completed.
Step 1: Ensure your domain name administrative/registrant email address is up to date at your current registrar.
Your registrar is the business or company that you purchased your domain name from.
An email will be sent to your address requesting permission to transfer the domain, so make sure that it is accurate! You need to receive and approve the transfer via this email for the transfer to be successful. You can check your official email address on our WHOIS lookup tool
Step 2: Obtain domain transfer code
Click on this link to obtain your transfer code.
CUT & PASTE the code on the order form when requested. DO NOT retype to avoid errors like 0 and O etc.
(Alternatively, you can obtain the code from your current domain name registrar.)
Step 3. Transfer pricing
The domain name transfer is free if your domain name is not due to expire in the next 90 days, otherwise standard domain name registration charges apply. The registration will extend your current domain registration by a further 2 years from the current expiry date.(ALL INITIAL TRANSFER ORDERS RECEIVED FOR .AU WILL BE FREE, THE TRANSFER CODE SUPPLIED IS USED TO DETERMINE THE EXACT EXPIRY DATE. IF THE DOMAIN IS DUE TO EXPIRE WITHIN 90 DAYS AN INVOICE IS THEN GENERATED FOR THE TRANSFER AND EMAILED TO THE CLIENT, once the transfer has successfully completed the domain will be reserved for another 2 years.)
Step 4. Place your transfer order request via our order form.
Proceed to the order form. Select option 2 on the order form, 'Transfer my domain name to MD'. Enter your domain and click next. Proceed with the order as normal.
Step 5. Approve the domain transfer
Approximately 24-48 hours after submitting the transfer, you will receive a domain transfer approval email to the domain registrant/administrative email address. Follow the instructions in the email and approve the transfer. Once approved, the transfer will take place in the period specified below. The email can not be sent to a different email address unless you update your domain contact information at your current registrar.
Step 6. Wait for the transfer to complete
Domain names transfers are not instant. Provided there aren't any errors / delays, it usually takes from 5 to 7 days for the transfer to complete from the time you approve the transfer. You will receive a welcome email to from MD to manage your domain name once the transfer is complete. Please be patient whilst your domain is being transferred. MD will email you once the transfer is complete or if there is a problem. The process can not be sped up.
Expired .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .id.au or .asn.au domain names
.au domain names enter a 14 day pending delete period after expiry, in which time, the domain name DNS settings are locked and the domain will not be functional. You can transfer a .au domain during this pending delete period. Once you approve the transfer, your domain name will become active again. The domain will then be transferred to MD. You will not be able to make any changes to your domain name until the transfer is completed in full.
Further Questions
Will a transfer affect my domain from working?
A domain transfer is a billing issue only. Transferring your domain name will not stop your current web site/email from working, as no settings are being changed. Whilst your domain name is being transferred, all settings are locked into the domain name and cannot be changed until the transfer is complete or it fails. This means you will not be able to update your domain name DNS settings whilst your domain is being transferred.
What is this error message - Failed transfer: You did not approve the transfer
Please ensure the domain name registrant/administrative email address is up to date. You can check the email address using the WHOIS Tool (look for it in the Domains section of the menubar). If you need to make changes contact your current domain name registrar, as we are unable to make any changes.
If this email address is INCORRECT there are 2 options available to confirm the transfer
1) Arrange with the current Registrar to change the email address to your current email address. 2) OR Send a fax to MD confirming the transfer. This fax needs to be on letterhead signed by the owner or director of the entity with photo identification, giving permission to transfer the domain name to MD Web Hosting.
Once you have updated the email address please click support on the top right hand corner of our home page and email 'domains' requesting to re-initiate the transfer.
If your email address is up to date and you did not receive a domain transfer approval email, spam filters may be stopping the email from being received. Please check your spam filters or computer security software is not stopping the message from being received.
