ICANN - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is responsible for the management and coordination of the Internet's domain name system.
Unlike the au namespace, ICANN has no policies on allocation or eligibility. Any interested party is able to register a gTLD (global top level domain) on a first come, first serve basis. gTLD's can be registered from 1 to 10 years.
