If you want to host a website on the Internet on your own server, then you also need access to a DNS Server. In the most basic sense, a DNS Server acts like a phonebook - someone inputs the phone number, (for example, www.yourdomain.com). The DNS Server will then convert your descriptive domain name into an IP address, (up to 12 numbers bunched into four groups, e.g., 192.168.0.54 is an example of an IP address). Once the DNS Server knows your IP, it will be able to forward the person who requested your website to your web-server.
Static IP Addresses
If you want to host the files on your own webserver, you also need a Static IP Address (an IP that never changes). A lot of broadband cable and ADSL services make use of Dynamic IPs (IPs that change over time) - therefore, you may have to purchase a separate static IP. If you would like a static IP then MD sells them at very reasonable prices!
