Changing nameserver settings at your current registrar

From MDSupportWiki

Using your existing domain with MD Hosting packages

Some of our customers may wish to use their existing domain name with an MD Hosting Package. You can easily transfer your existing domain to MD; we recommend that you have all your hosting, domain and add-ons from MD to simplify your billing and any technical support issues; however, some people are happy keeping their domain name with their old domain company.

To use an existing domain with our hosting, you have to change the 'nameservers' so that they point to MD's web-servers. That way, when someone types in your web address into their browser it will look up where your nameservers are pointing to and know to look for your website on MD's web servers.

Note that your current registrar will still manage your domain name.

Procedure

  1. Select one of our Hosting packages.
  2. The first step of the order wizard will ask you what you would like to do with your domain. Select the third option (I will use my existing domain name with a hosting package). Then, type your existing domain name in - for example, yourdomain.com.au
  3. Continue with the order process to completion.
  4. Once you are complete, MD will send you a Welcome Email filled with all the relevant details. Among other things it will contain our name-servers. They will look like nsxx.mdwebhosting.com.au (where xx could be any number from 1-99).
  5. When you have our nameservers, you will then have to contact your current registrar and get them to update your domain name with our nameservers. Some registrars offer an online domain management service so that you can do it all yourself (for example, MD's domain management utility can be found here).
  6. The change will take up to 72 hours to ripple through the internet (the technical phrase is DNS propagation). Therefore, don't delete your website from your previous hosting company straight away, or it will stop loading.

The diagram below illustrates how it all works.
