If you want to register an Australian domain name, important rules apply. During the registration process, you will be required to meet the requirements as stated below.Other domain names without the .au e.g. .com, .net, etc do not require you to meet these requirements.

.COM.AU & .NET.AU
Popular amongst commercial entities, identifies your domain entity as being based in Australia, serving an Australian market. ABN/ACN/ARBN, etc is required.Individuals may obtain .au domain names by simply applying for an ABN, and under the sub heading choose entity type of 'sole trader'.
You must be able to supply an ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN to secure your domain - register/check your ABN (http://www.abr.business.gov.au/(vj0lw1jbd2t3ti55ciz50w45)/main.aspx) , register/check your ACN (http://www.search.asic.gov.au/gns001.html), your domain will be registered based on the criteria that most closely matches your domain.
- An exact match of the business’ name or trademark
- An abbreviation of the business’ name or trademark
- An acronym of the business’ name or trademark
- Product that the business manufactures or sells
- A program that the business administers
- An activity that your business facilitates, teaches or trains
- A service that your business provides
- A venue that the business operates
- A profession that is practiced by the business’ employees or members
- An event that your business organises or sponsors
Domain names can be 2 to 63 letters, and words can be separated by hyphens, but not spaces.

.ASN.AU
The .asn.au domains are normally reserved for incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sporting and special interest clubs. An example is the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry who have registered the domain 'www.acci.asn.au'.Any non-commercial registered Australian entity is eligible, and must meet one of the following criteria:
A program that the business administers
An activity that your business facilitates, teaches or trains
A service that your business provides
A venue that the business operates
A profession that is practiced by the business’ employees or members
An event that your business organises or sponsors
You must supply us with the name of your incorporated association, political party, trade union, sporting and special interest club that the domain will be registered for. An ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN is not required to secure your domain, but it is preferred if you could supply one.
Your ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN must specify that you are an incorporated association, political party, trade union, sporting or special interest club.

.ORG.AU
The .org.au domains are normally reserved for charities and non-profit organisations, eg. clubs, chirches, community, welfare, and charity type groups. An example is CARE Australia who have registered that domain 'careaustralia.org.au'. Please note that any non-commercial Australian entity is eligible. You must supply us with the name of your organisation that the domain will be registered for.
An ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN is not required to secure your domain, but it is preferred if you could supply one. Your ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN must specify that you are a registered charity or non-profit organisation.

Especially designed for individuals, NO ABN/ACN/ABRN/ARSN requirements and must reside in Australia. Applicant must meet the following criteria:- Derived from or includes the individuals’ name

smith.id.au
The above examples is what 'derived' from your name means. Please do not submit nic names, or obscure id.au orders.
